Notes of the Great Crater

July 7th, 1694

Day 2 on Grande Falaise

The basin is of a particular formation with steep surrounding walls of smooth texture. The water is uncommonly hot in comparison to yesterday. I witnessed a thin plume emanating from the center of the basin.

Red Isle folklore speaks of a dragon residing beneath the surface and most do not venture close to these waters. I suspect a more natural explanation.

Vulcanic activity in this region has been observed as I believe that beneath the surface the water is boiling. Sulfuric odour detected. Island may still be active!

Must abandon survey before erup….
